President Barack Obama paid homage to the NAACP (National Assocation for the Advancement of Colored People) at its 100 year anniversary celebration yesterday with a motivational speech.
President Obama touched on the nation’s constant struggles with discrimination despite elected minorities and the achievements of the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement.
“I understand there may be a temptation among some to think that discrimination is no longer a problem in 2009,” Obama said from the New York event. “But make no mistake: The pain of discrimination is still felt in America.”
He also referenced superstar athlete LeBron James and rapper Lil Wayne to remind families of the importance of education.
“They might think they’ve got a pretty jump shot or a pretty good flow,” Mr. Obama said, “but our kids can’t all aspire to be LeBron or Lil Wayne. I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers, not just ballers and rappers. I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court Justice. I want them aspiring to be President of the United States of America.”

Lil Wayne got straight A’s in grade school and was actually going to college for awhile… He’s pretty intelligent. In my opinion, President Obama should have chosen a different person for an example. If Lil Wayne wasn’t a rapper, he could very well be a psychologist; that’s what he was majoring in, after all!

He never said, being a rapper or a basketball player was wrong, or wasn’t considered being successful. He said that ALL of today’s youth CAN’T (and in my opinion as well) SHOULDN’T be rappers and ball players.

A lot of ya’ll is taking what the president said out of context. The only thing he’s saying is not all young black kids can be rappers or athletes. He never said that there’s a problem with young kids wanting to be one of the two but that’s the only thing young black kids want to be. It’s harder to become a rapper or pro athlete than becoming a doctor lawyer or scientist. And he only used LeBron’s and Lil Wayne’s name because they are the best at what they do.
