No one is more disappointed that Lil Wayne is jailed on gun charges than the cop who saved the rapper’s life 15 years ago after an accidental shot to the chest.

“It’s sad to see somebody get involved with guns like that – any kid, no matter who they are,” said Robert Hoobler, a New Orleans Police Department cop for two decades.

“I’m sorry to see that happened to him, but at least he admitted to what happened and took his medicine,” said Hoobler, 53, who now works for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Hoobler is more of an AC/DC and Metallica fan, but he has genuine affection for Lil Wayne.

They crossed paths in 1994 when Lil Wayne was a seventh grader living in New Orleans’ rough Hollygrove neighborhood. A call came in for shots fired, and Hoobler and other cops rushed to the address.

“We heard loud music the first time, but nothing the second time – just a little voice moaning for help,” Hoobler said.

The cops kicked in the door and found Lil Wayne covered in blood. He had dragged himself from the bedroom to the front of the apartment, leaving a bloody trail.

There were no ambulances immediately available, so Hoobler cradled Lil Wayne in his arms as they raced in a police cruiser to the nearest hospital.

That saved the rapper’s life, doctors said.

Lil Wayne has acknowledged Hoobler’s heroics in person and in the press and he’s become a a bit of a local celebrity, recognized from a VH1 “Behind the Music” special. At the school where the cop’s grandkids attend, children ask for autographs.

Just last week, Hoobler bought his first Lil Wayne album and he has been listening to it on a boom box in his police cruiser after work.

“Now that I finally got a hold of his new CD, and see that it really turned out good, I hope he makes more of them,” he said.

And there hasn’t been many updates on our favorite rapper over the weekend.

“Lil Wayne is gonna be OK,” retired NYPD detective and noted “hip-hop cop” Derrick Parker told MTV News. “While he’s in jail, it’s a matter of fact they may not put him with the general population because of who he is and his popularity. They might lock him down and let him come out with a supervisor and stuff like that [when he's] in the main area — but he’s definitely going to be treated differently.”

According to Parker, the way Wayne will be handled is due to safety concerns for him, of course, but also to ensure as much normalcy as the facility possibly can — it won’t resemble pampered treatment by any means. Parker said despite Wayne’s small physical stature and his propensity to signal a particular gang affiliation in his rhymes, the rapper won’t have much to fear in terms of extortion, bullying or worse.

“Wayne is from the streets, from the Magnolia Houses in New Orleans, so I’m sure those guys have been in jail or locked up at some point,” Parker said. “So being in prison is no big deal to them. Plaxico isn’t built for that — he’s the type of guy that’s never been locked up like that before. He’s gonna need a coach or someone to tell him what to expect, since he’s not used to that.”

But what exactly can Wayne expect? Fortunately, he won’t to cut his trademark tresses.

“The days of doing that are over,” retired corrections officer Charles Reid told MTV News. “They can’t make inmates do that anymore — it’s within their rights to maintain any kind of hairstyle.”

Wayne will have a few comforts of home while he’s away. He will be able to watch network television — not cable, however. And he’ll be able to watch DVD movies. He told Rolling Stone recently he plans to take an iPod in with him assist with writing music, but a source close to the prison facility told MTV News that would not be allowed.

Reid, who worked at Rikers Island for 21 years as an officer and an investigator, said Wayne’s days would continue to be regimented, but in a much different way. He suggested the rapper may have to succumb to some work conditions, whether in sanitation or the mess hall, for example. Reid also noted that different wings of the prison carry different types of criminals, but guessed that Wayne would be housed in a dormitory area and not even be confined to a cell.

“Like a hospital, where there’s maybe 20 to 25 beds in an open ward, or it maybe bunk beds,” Reid said of Wayne’s possible lodgings. “Where he has a nightstand to keep his personal belongings.”

Due to the short nature of Wayne’s sentence — one year, which could mean 10 months, including the possibly of early release after serving 80 percent of good time, possibly putting him back onstage in a little as eight months — the rapper could very well spend his entire term at Rikers Island.

“I think he’s gonna go in there and do his time and do it quietly,” Parker said. “If he does it with good behavior, that will be a plus for him — then he’ll be out and putting out a new album.”

So it looks like Lil Wayne will not have to cut off his dreads, but unfortunately he won’t be able to take in an iPod. Rap mogul Bryan ‘Baby‘ Williams is dreading his hitmaking protegé Lil Wayne’s upcoming jail time – because he can’t imagine life not speaking to the superstar when he wants to.

Williams discovered the rapper, who he considers his son, and admits Wayne’s 12-month jail spell on weapons charges will be tough on him.

He has pledged to visit his protege at New York’s notorious Rikers Island prison weekly – and hopes that will be enough to keep both men upbeat.

He says, “I’ve been with him forever. It will be the first time in my life I’ll not be reachable to him.”

“We work together, we’re on the road together. We’re always together. I try not to even think about it… I’m losing something in my soul.”

And he’s not the only one worrying about the next 12 months while Lil Wayne is locked up – his Cash Money label artist Drake admits the prison sentence will hit home when the rapper is sentenced next week (08-Feb-10).

He tells Complex magazine, “We don’t really talk about it. It’s surreal to me still. I guess on the day that it really happens, I’ll start thinking about what I gotta do.”

“I wanna have a talk with Wayne and ask him what he needs from me.”

“Although REBEL8 has been grinding it out for over six years, we are still a very small clothing label,” Joshy D., REBEL8 co-founder, told BallerStatus.com. “When someone of such fame and popularity as Lil Wayne shows interest in the REBEL8 brand, it’s just a beautiful thing. Someone in the top 1% reaching down and picking our brand to represent and wear feels f***ing amazing.”

The company took an off-the-shelf R8 Logo New Era cap and applied one of Mike Giant’s signature fonts under the brim of the cap, reading “Young Money”, the rapper’s label, which he’s been rocking at shows on his recent tour.

Joshy D. also made it clear, the company has never paid for a celebrity endorsement, so Weezy’s interest in the brand is all his own.

“When Lil Wayne rocks REBEL8, it shows me that one of the biggest artists in the world who can afford any brand out there, and gets approached by hundreds to be endorsed, genuinely loves it,” he added. “We have never paid any celeb or ANYONE for that matter to wear REBEL8. Our growth and success is completely organic. Lil Wayne chose us, not the other way around.”
