The source said: "It's probably the best job you can have in the jail. It's the highest paying job in there."
Lil Wayne - real name Dwayne Carter - reportedly works the midnight tour and socialises with at-risk inmates.
The source added: "He mingles with them. It's not a physical job at all, and it's better than working the kitchen or sanitation.
"Given his high profile, this is a work assignment that he can fulfil without having to move around the larger part of the jail."
Suicide prevention aides are recommended by correction officers or can inmates can volunteer for the job. The chosen prisoners must take courses to learn how to deal with their at-risk counterparts.
