Lil Wayne is officially the cover star for Rolling Stone’s May 2025 issue, which you can check out above.
In the cover story, Wayne opened up to Andre Gee about his upcoming album Tha Carter VI, his relationship with Birdman, having to evacuate his Hidden Hills home during the California wildfires, and his thoughts on the Super Bowl LIX headline drama.
Weezy F Baby says this new album stands out due to its collaborative focus, naming Miley Cyrus, mgk (Machine Gun Kelly), Elephant Man, Wyclef Jean, Bono from U2, Kameron Carter, and even Andrea Bocelli as features.
He also shared that him and Wyclef have worked together on nearly 30 songs for C6, including one with Andrea singing “Ave Maria” after learning Weezy‘s life story.
“It’s one of them records that I feel is going to stop time,” Wyclef says about the track after personally flying to Italy to ask Bocelli to feature on it.
Tunechi also previewed several unreleased songs during the interview. One finds him mimicking Biggie and Tupac’s flows, blending “One More Chance” and “Hit ‘Em Up” into his own.
Another track is a laid-back ode to cruising through L.A., where Tune drops a shout-out to the late Matthew Perry.
He laughingly explained that he didn’t know Perry, he just needed a name to fit the syllable count.
Furthermore, Wayne played a record that samples Billie Eilish and revealed there will be production from Ye aka Kanye West (which may not make the project) and Wheezy.
One of the most emotional moments on Tha Carter VI is a song recorded in 2013 called “These Are the Days“, featuring Mr. Carter‘s son Kameron and U2’s Bono.
Bono sings about “counting the days”, while Weezy raps about waking up in a hospital bed after an epileptic seizure.
Lil Tunechi spoke on his repaired bond with Birdman, calling him “still pops”, and said they talk daily about sports betting.
When asked about the NFL’s decision to pass on him for the Super Bowl, Tune said the league had him doing things he’d never do otherwise.
“They stole that feeling. So, I don’t want to do it. It was perfect. To perform, it’s a bunch of things they’re going to tell you to do and not do, asses to kiss and not kiss. Also, if you notice, I was a part of things I’ve never been a part of. Like [Michael] Rubin’s all-white parties. I’m doing sh*t with Tom Brady. That was all for that. So, you ain’t never seen me in them types of venues. I ain’t Drake. I ain’t out there smiling like that everywhere. I’m in the stu’, smokin’ and recording.”
Wayne also addressed the backlash from his photo with Donald Trump, saying he didn’t care at all.
“F*ck no, I don’t care about no backlash for nothin’ I do, you know me, man. Also, my mama woulda been mad if I ain’t smile. That might have been the only backlash I would have worried about. So, I don’t give a f*ck about that type of sh*t. Tell ’em my d*ck big though.”
Additionally, Weezy weighed in on Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake, though unknowingly sang “Not Like Us” live without realizing it was a diss track.
“I didn’t even know it was Kendrick!”
In lighter moments, he joked about the latest Saw movie, aliens, the Discovery and History channels, vacations, not knowing who Sexyy Red is, and completely forgetting about Kanye and JAY-Z’s Watch The Throne collaboration album.
He also opened up about his sons’ growing rap careers and being open to doing a sequel to Like Father, Like Son with them, saying it’s natural and reminded him of his own start.
“It’s impossible for you not to compare. This what the f*ck I was looking like…”
